IELTS Speaking Tips

Speaking is an important module in IELTS. Many of us who can write English quite well find it difficult when we are required to converse in English. Since, vocal skills are as important as written skills in any field of life, difficulty in speaking English with fluency can prove to be a major hindrance in success.

Tips which will help you improve your spoken English:

  • Concentrate on Phrases rather than words. Phrases are group of words that go together naturally. Whenever you come across a new word, write down a phrase or a sentence with it. This will help improve your speaking and grammar 4-5 times faster.
  • Do not concentrate on Grammar only if you want to improve your English speaking skills. teach you to think about English, you want to speak automatically without thinking!
  • Only Use Real English Lessons & Materials. This will help you understand native speakers and speak easily. Use real magazines, audio articles, TV shows, movies, radio talk shows, and audio books.
  • Listen, listen and listen to improve your speaking skills. Don’t read textbooks. Listen to English. Spend most of your study time listening- that is the key to great speaking.
  • Learn each word with its utmost depth. This can be done only if you repeat each lesson many times. For example, if you have an audio book, listen to the first chapter 30 times before you go to the second chapter.
  • Repeat each lesson by using different point of views. For example, if you are listening to a story, listen it with different points of view- Past, Perfect, Present, Future.
After each listening lesson, try to answer questions. For example, your tutor may tell you a short simple story. He will then ask you a lot of easy questions. Every time you hear a question, you pause and answer it. You learn to answer questions quickly– without thinking and hence your English
becomes automatic.

Tips To Improve Your English Pronunciation

  • First of all, improve your exposure to English speaking by trying to come into contact with English friends and being in an English environment.
  • You have to be adept in the art of listening and grasping words if you want to improve your speaking skills. Try to focus and then copy the people who speak English with a good pronunciation. You actually can’t know what is English pronunciation if you don’t listen to English.
  • Speak slowly focusing on each word. When you try to speak English slowly at the first time, you will get faster subconsciously without doing anything, you should pronounce each word correctly.
  • Practice, practice and practice more because only practice can make you perfect. Read out loud, speak English with your friends and in places where you can use English. Don’t shy away from mistakes. The more you practice, faster you will know the correct way to stress syllables.
  • You can also record yourself speaking English, then listen to the recording later and compare your speaking with a native speaker. This way you can realize your mistakes and correct them later.
